Amerigo Vespucci airport in Florence lies about 4 kilometers from Florence in the Peretola area, and is the city’s only airport. While growing, exceeding the figure of 1,700,000 passengers in  2004, it is not at the same level as Pisa airport. However, it is an important private and commercial node for Tuscany and central Italy, offering many flights within Italy and Europe but none intercontinental, the single runway being unable to receive such airplanes.
